The Apparition (L’apparition mediaminique) by James Tissot, 1885
Tissot was very interested in spiritualism, and had been heartbroken when his lover Kathleen Newton, in the terminal stages of tuberculosis, committed suicide at the age of 28. In 1885 Tissot met the medium William Eglington, and this mezzotint is an idealized conception of a manifesting seance in which he saw the apparition of his dearly departed Kathleen, accompanied by the guide of the medium. Both figures are illuminated.
